Many people never realize that you don't need materialistic things to enjoy life. The real world is a perfect example of this because people are constantly saying that if they get something then their life will be so much better. One year my sister wanted a doll for christmas, she was begging for this doll, and she ended up getting the doll, her life was great for about 4 days until, she found something else she wanted. Society teaches us that things can make us happy, even though we have to be the ones to make us happy.. In the Alchemist a perfect character that shows this, is the crystal merchant, for his whole life he was constantly wanting more and more money and had a dream of going to Mecca. Now that he was the owner of a shop he could go there, but all of those materialistic things were holding him back. In the book he says “I thought that someday i'd be rich, and could go to Mecca, but I could never bring myself to let someone be in charge of the shop” (56). This shows that since the crystal merchant was focusing on the things his whole life, it is now holding him back from his dreams of actually being happy. This also occurred with Santiago, it even happened while he was working at the crystal merchant’s shop. Santiago originally started
