In The Cay, Phillip’s character reveals that through many conflicts he developed care, determination, and contentment.
Phillip demonstrates care after experiencing loss as evidence in the novel when Timothy dies and Phillip reflects on all of the things Timothy had done for him. At the beginning of the novel Phillip acted selfish and only focused on himself. You can see him being selfish when they are first on the raft and he wants the water. Timothy wants to save the water for later saying on, “but we mus’ be wise ‘bout what we ‘ave” Ch. 3 (pg. 35 Taylor) However, Phillip wanted to drink all of it then. When he doesn’t get his way he becomes upset saying, “I must have water,Timothy. I am very hot.” Ch.3 (pg. 35 Taylor) When he did not get more he accused Timothy of saving it all for himself yelling, “You’re saving all the water for yourself.” However, after Timothy

When Phillip and Timothy first came to the island, because he was blind, he was always afraid to be left alone. Phillip states “It was, of course, being unable to see that made all the sounds so frightening.” Ch. 8 (pg. 65 Taylor) However now that Timothy had died and it was just Phillip and Stew Cat on the island he was determined that he would fix things to the way they were. In chapter 16 it talks about how he became self sufficient and could do more things by himself. Phillip states, “There was so much to do that I hardly knew where to start.” Ch.16 (pg. 116 Taylor) He became more determined to finish what Timothy had started and knew that he could not be afraid to be alone. He states, “It was my blindness was protecting me from fear.” Ch.16 (pg. 114 Taylor) The change of character from the beginning of being fearful to now being determined shows how the actions of Phillip changed throughout the
