One cause of the civil rights movement is the direct segregation or discrimination, where there were like white only bars, stores, windows. The buses were a big problem. Many white people were violent towards African Americans. Examples of this include, from Leon’s story, The KKK (Ku Klux Klan) would prowl around at night looking to seriously injure or murder people and plant burning crosses in people’s yards. Also, from Leon’s story, when they went to peacefully protest, they had to wear tubes around themselves, so they weren’t murdered in the streets. At one point, when Leon was doing an odd job for a man who owned a restaurant, two German Sheps were released on Leon with intent to kill.
The effect of this act is freedom. The laws were changed and taken into effect. After frequent violent protests, laws were finally enforced. The constitution was already changed in the 1800s, but they were never enforced. After the civil rights movement, it was law for police to enforce the 13th amendment.
