Infant Death
According to Dr. Mary Harding, in 2013 there were approximately 24,000 stillbirths and neonatal deaths reported in the United States (Harding, para 1). Many people today really don’t have knowledge on stillbirth and neonatal death until they come across it. Stillbirth is death of a baby before and during delivery. Neonatal death is when a baby dies in the first 28 days of life. In many cases the direct cause of the baby’s death can’t be determined. Stillbirth and neonatal death have many causes and effects which can have parents and families feelings sad, shock, and can impact their view on every aspect of life. “Instead of giving birth, I gave death” (Despelder 428). In The Last Dance Encountering Death and Dying a women in the book lost her daughter who was born dead. The mother in the book experienced stillbirth. She expressed how she felt losing her daughter. She said “Instead of a cradle, there is a grave; instead of a receiving blanket, there are burial clothes” (Despelder 428). Coping with infant death can be very overwhelming for the parents and other loved ones. Some mothers say they can picture or still hear their baby first cry. When parents lose baby in a way of stillbirth and neonatal death different range of emotions can come and go. The emotions can include guilt, grief, anger, or disbelief. The parents tend to blame each other for the baby’s death. Perinatal losses can also lead to postpartum depression. After experiencing perinatal loss symptoms of depression or anxiety may be inability to cope, inability to sleep, and suicidal thoughts. The mother will go through significant hormonal and emotional challenges. For example, the mother’s body will still go through vaginal bleeding for weeks.
