Adolescent Delinquency and the Cause of Such Behavior
Juvenile delinquency is on the rise and parents are trying to find out why. Some believe it is their social status, while others believe once they commit a crime, they are more likely to recidivism (Grunwald, H., Lockwood, B., Harris, P., & Mennis, J., 2010). Parenting adolescents can be an issue if the parent(s) do not understand how to go about it. Parental control, while necessary, is not always going to be done in the correct manner. Supervising adolescents is challenging work but the risk in not doing it will result in juvenile behavior (Harris-Mckoy, D., & Cui, M., 2013).

Research has shown that adolescent is more likely to commit crimes because of lack of parental control with a mean of “4.33, with a standard deviation (SD) of 1.40 and a range from 0 to 6” (Harris-Mckoy, D., & Cui, M., 2013, p. 840). The mean in Wave I (adolescent delinquency) being 1.13, shows a slight increase in criminal behavior for those adolescents not receiving parental control (Harris-Mckoy, D., & Cui, M., 2013). In another study similar to parental control, neglected adolescent is also a major factor on juvenile delinquency. Within the result of the study, it concluded that neglected adolescents are likely to be diagnosis with mental health issues with a (p < .01) value (Ryan, J., Williams, A., & Courtney, M., 2013, p. 458). Included in the results are also increase in physical aggression, anti-social with others peers, and uncommitted in regards to quality of life.
