Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any part of the digestive tract or GI tract. The most common portion affected is the terminal portion of the ileum, or the first part of the large intestines. That is why another name for this disease is called ileitis or enteritis. According to Nordqvist “Approximately one fifth of all people with Crohn’s disease have a close relative with some type of inflammatory bowel disease. People of Jewish descent have a higher chance of developing Crohn’s disease.” While they are not sure of what the exact cause of Crohn’s is, they have found that it is usually diagnosed to people from the ages 15 and 30.
