Inclusion Body Disease (IBD), sometimes called “Stargazing”, is a known pathogen that affects the nervous system, organs, and tissue of its host and in many cases, leads to death (PET MD, 2010). An inclusion body represents a wide spread of bacteria throughout a cell. (Dictionary, 2012) Microscopic changes are mainly seen in the kidney, liver or blood cells, these are known to be abnormal structures within the cells. IBD was first identified in the mid 1970’s, but curiously no known pathogens are known for its cause. (Spinner, 2016)

They mainly feed on the blood, causing anemia to its host. Not only this, but they multiply by the dozen with clutches of eggs ranging in the 80s. There are treatable sicknesses mites give off to snakes, but in order to fully know if your snake has been infected with IBD, (Reptiles, n.d.) a proper evaluation by a veterinarian must take place in order to diagnose treatments (if there’s any at all). Other sicknesses from parasites seem twice as bad, but happen to have treatments available. Scientist have recently found more of an interest in this disease and the mystery of IBD. It is all a speculation as to where it originated and how it has been transmitted. People can only prevent the chances of IBD infecting their snake through observations and maintaining a non-stressful clean environment.

Euthanasia is the only humane option because it won’t stop hurting no matter what is done to help the effects of this disease. There are similar diseases throughout snakes, even other animals have a sickness with the same effects as IBD. Un curable and resulting in misery for that animal’s short lifetime.
