If America gets chosen for the Selection, then her family will get an enormous amount of money. America’s mom has a major impact on America’s choice, trying to bribe her into entering the Selection. In the book her mom says, “‘Well that's not all. You can accept your own work now and go alone and… you can keep half of whatever you make.’” (Cass 27). Her mom knows that they will not be able to get out of the number Five and depart from their money troubles unless America becomes the next princess. Her mom reasons that she has as good of a chance as anyone else. Because she is confident that America will get chosen for the selection and become the next princess, she risks losing half of what America …show more content…
Lucy works at the palace because of the Caste System. Most maids enjoy what they do, but Lucy is an exception. She is traumatized by the rebel attacks, which happen at the palace quite often, because she was once captured. She was licked and was almost shot. She was never able to recover from that, which is the reason she doesn’t necessarily like working at the palace. Unfortunately, she can’t change where she works, because she was sold by a family of Threes, to the palace; it was all because of the Caste
