The Cask Of Amontillado Mood

“ The Cask of Amontillado ” written by Edgar Allen Poe. The theme of his story is a powerful tell of revenge. Montresor intends to seek revenge on Fortunato for insulting him. Montresor intends to seek vengeance in support of his family motto “ Nemo me impune lacessit “. ( No one assails me with impunity ). He uses very interesting choice of plot and mood. The plot is about Montresor wanting revenge on Fortunato because of the insult. The mood however is dark, suspenseful. The story it says “ i c “ sprinkle with sacrificial meal ”. The word often involves torture, common method of sacrifice. Which tells us he's referring to the family motto. Also as you read the tale Montresor says “ I must not only punish but punish with impunity ”, stating he’s punishing him for his actions referring to how Fortunato insulted him. Which says he is smiling because Fortunato is smiling not know that Montresor is going to kill him. In Latin the meaning of the word is is very important because it gives the story the feelings of the characters. Which is dark, suspenseful and vengeance. It says right in the beginning “ The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as i best could, but when he ventured upon insult i vowed revenge ”. That there is dark and revengeful because he said “ vowed revenge ” which meant he wont stop till he has felt he’s succeed. Poe creates his suspense through a physical and difficult journey taken by the central characters, symbolism and the references to sickness, these elements work together so the reader knows he’s going to die before the end of the story. Starts as light and fun at the carnival then takes a turn going through the tunnels making it darker and colder
