The title of the story is ironic itself. The title’s literal meaning is ‘A place that stores Amontillado’; however, in contrast, it’s figurative meaning would be ‘The casket that has Amontillado’. The irony just within the commencement of the book foreshadows Montresor 's evil plot by describing the setting, and using names that represented the opposite of the true dark atmosphere of the story.
As Fortunato foolishly follows Montresor on a journey to his brick grave, the murderer ironically mentions kind phrases to his victim whom he would like to punish with impunity (Poe 2). Several times in the story, Montresor uses the word “friend” to mention Fortunato to the reader or even to just talk to him, but after reader the story one can tell he is being ironic since he Montresor wants to murder him. Furthermore, in the short story, The narrator mentions Fortunato 's recurring cough in which Montresor “in concern” of his health suggests they go back because his health is precious, but knowing he wants to end Fortunato’s life, he uses the dramatic irony to not cause any suspicion of a murder plan (Poe 3).
