The Buying Experience, Not Things article argues that experience is better than material things. The article is attempting to persuade readers that experience is greater than objects. Money and time are 2 factors that could have been factored into the article but by leaving them out shows that experience is more important to the article and the author. The mind wanders often. It wanders while you sit, eat, or even read. Often time’s humans don’t even realize that the mind is wandering. Psychologist believe that happiness is the cause of the human brain being able to remember things for long periods of time. 10 years’ worth of research has proved that experiences bring people more happiness than material things. In the essay, psychologist Matthew Killingsburg compiled data and did a scientific study for every living in the moment cliché that has been in existence. This data is an example of ethos because it appeals to the credibility of the psychologist and effects people’s judgement based on the fact that he is a psychologist. Because Matthew has a degree, people that the audience is reaching will be more strongly influenced because he knows what he is talking about and he is a professional in his line of work. Another example of the essays use of ethos is when it states that “Thomas Gilovich and Matthew Killingsworth along with Amit Kumar wrote a journal for Psychological Science on spending money in connections to enduring happiness (Hamblin 2014).” This evidence speaks to the tool of ethos because 3 respected professionals are all agreeing and writing about the difference between experience and material. Using the 2 rhetorical tools strongly, allowed Hamblin to argue not only one side but both. Material objects in my own experience have fated fast and always fade. Yeah we can buy something we really want but how long do we really want it before the next big thing comes out. I’ve only ever been on one trip that I can remember and it was with my team to California. I bring this up because I believe that Hamblin is right when he states that the emotions and the anticipation are amazing. Can you imagine how I felt? Id pack my bag little by little every day and mark off the days on the calendar so I knew exactly how long I’d have to wait. The trip started off rough but even that became an amazing story to tell. It wasn’t the material things that mattered to me it was the time and the memories that I got out of the experience.
