Out of the Norm A Breaching Experiment is an experiment that seeks to examine people’s reactions to violations of commonly accepted social norms or rules. Norms are described as the expectations, or rules of behavior, that develop out of societies values. For this assignment, I was asked to violate a social standard by doing something out of the ordinary and observe and record the reactions of the people who witnessed the breach. The response to the break is crucial to the experiment. It is important to act as normal as possible while doing this experiment to receive honest feedback from participants. The Breaching Experiment can evoke a variety of outcomes from whispers, astonishment, laughter and in extreme cases anger. The experiment

Breaking the norm is when someone does something out of the ordinary. For example, when someone calls the wrong number I could pretend to be the person they intended to call or by eating your soup with a fork, either way I would be doing something abnormal. For my experiment I wanted to see people’s reactions to me eating dessert before the main course. In order to test this, I tried my experiment in two different settings, I had dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings with my friends and at my parents’ house with my parents and siblings. My hypothesis for Buffalo Wild Wings was that the waitress would ask me if I wanted the main course prior to my dessert and my family will and friends will question and make fun of me.…

For this sociological experiment I broke the norm that led to the ¨personal bubble¨ rule, by getting, “too close¨ to strangers when I talk to them by society's standards. This social norm shows that people are used to having their own space and not having others be within a certain distance. When you talk or interact with another person you both are in control of the personal space given. This leads to me testing others by stepping over boundaries to make them feel uncomfortable, nervous, or embarrassed.…

Because the experiment takes place in a laboratory, Baumrind argues that participants will not act how they might in the real world. She states that the laboratory is an unaccustomed setting for a typical being and may cause anxiety and passivity (225). Correspondingly, Saul Mcleod, a psychologist who summarizes and critiques Milgram’s experiment, states that the “important” location of the experiment, obedience levels increased (Simply Psychology). The point about setting is one in which Baumrind and Parker are able to reach a consensus.…

The folkway violation that I chose to do is to interrupt people's conversations. I wanted to see how people would react and what would they say and or do. I did this to a couple then I did this to a group of sophomores to see their reactions. Then I did it to grown ups A reason why I chose to do it in the library is that there is always people in there. Another reason I chose to do the social experiment in the cafeteria is because there are many varieties of age group…

I learned that breaking social norms is frowned upon by society very much. Societal norms are so set when an individual steps outside of those norms he/she is looked at as an outsider who should know better and follow the rules. Some social norms can be broken depending on sanction. For example, church is a formal sanction, there may be members that begin to shout or break out into dance in response to the feeling that overwhelms them from the music or the message that the minister may be preaching as opposed to when a person in a classroom setting he/she cannot just get up and start dancing or yelling across the classroom because the setting is different and the person will be looked as someone who is going against what it's supposed to be…

For my second breaching experiment I attempted to complete the “What are you wearing experiment”. A few of my friends and I decided to dress up in the classic 80s work out gear. We found some neon leggings, leotards, scrunchies and leg warmers and headed out the dorms towards Isla Vista. By the time we reached Del Playa it was about 9:00pm on a Friday night.…

How people react towards someone who breaks an everyday society’s idea of a social norm can vary in many different ways all depending on the situation, the people surrounding the incident and who is breaking the norm. I, wearing pajamas in public setting such as the mall, my mother office, in my neighborhood and general popular places around town caused many to quite surprising reactions from my peers, family, strangers and friends. Sometimes people’s reactions are quite subtle and they tend not to show any interest in a change of action at all. However, at other times a person reaction to an alteration in the social norm can be quite large and exaggerated. Walking in public settings in a town that I grew up in (e.g. shopping centre, squares,…

The location I choose to perform my violation of a culture norm was at the cafeteria. I used the cafeteria that is in the Gordon student center. After trying to decide which cultural norm to experiment with, I choose to invade someone else's personal space. Prior to conducting this experiment, my hypothesis was that I was going to offend all of the people involved, so I prepared myself mentally for the backlash and negative feedback. Surprisingly, there was a range of emotions and reactions to me breaking this folkway. Emotions ranged from being completely offended and disgusted to finding it hysterical. The reactions from the people fluctuate from being angry and notifying the manager to asking me to join them for dinner. The experiment was conducted at least two times in both the bar and restaurant section, except for Sunday the 18th.…

As I was violating this social norm, I felt strange and out of place. I had a lot of awkward encounters that day and i think it was because i normally don't stop and start talking to strangers or greet them by using hand gestures. Normally if someone smiles or says hi, i smile back or say or hi and then we both go our separate ways. With this experiment, I would have to stop and greet them in an unusual and personal way.…

Manipulation and Control Experiments are used to get a better understanding of things. They help expand our knowledge on anything from diseases, mental illnesses, and why we as human beings act the way we do. In Stanley Milgram’s experiment “The Perils of Obedience” and Phillip Zimbardo’s “The Stanford Prison Experiment” we learned just how far some would go with the power they are given. Zimbardo’s and Milgram’s experiments showed how having the slightest bit of power can corrupt one’s morals.…

The norm to violate the way we eat a banana was more funny than expected. I casually started to eat my banana at my lunch table as I would to a watermelon, when out of a sudden a friend notice and called it out to my friends. Their reaction was to just laugh at the infrequent way I was eating my banana. I then explain to them the reason as to why I was doing that and some decided to try it out with me and was a fun experience overall. The second norm was a bit challenging since where I live there are few elevators but fortunately I when to a school field trip to Houston where there were elevator mostly everywhere I went.…
