He wanted to teach the story of the Holocaust but not all the gruesome events. He wanted them to know what they did and what happened and he never wanted to say “Auschwitz” in his book.

He wanted to go back to the Berlin house for so long until he forgot his friends names and he met Shmuel.
4. Explain what Bruno’s mother means when she says, “We don’t have the luxury of thinking” (page 13). Why is Bruno’s mother unhappy at Out-With? (30 pts.)
Bruno’s mother is unhappy with “Out-With” because she found out what her husband was doing. After she found that out she decided it was unsafe for her children and wanted them to go back to Berlin.
5. Why do you think the author used Shmuel, another boy, to help make his point in this novel? Would it have been as effective if he’d used adults? Explain. (20 pts.)
The book’s events would have never happened because the adults would have known it wasn’t safe for him to go under the fence and they wouldn’t allow him to. They also wouldn’t have so much in common so Bruno wouldn’t feel the desire to go and “play” with them on the other side of the fence.
