The structural format makes “The Book Thief” not only easy to comprehend but gives the book a unique and enhanced read. Markus Zusak puts together his book with sections so that one is able to know what is reading about, it is not all jumbled together like other books tend to be. With ease, he has separated the chapters into short stories with a different mood within each and every one of them. Enclosed in this incredible format can be found small notes that foreshadow different events and reveals things that do not fit into that portion of writing. “The Book Thief” is based in the time period of the Second World War in Germany, where it was very dangerous and anti Jewish. One could say that the main family that Zusak spoke about, the Hubermanns, are not against the Jewish but definitely Adolf Hitler, although they have to do as told or be extremely punished. The Hubermanns are a kind and caring family that will do anything for anybody, and in one situation, that is exactly what they were going to do. In the different situations that they are put into, there are some excruciating punishments that would be done at any time if they get caught, or do not do something that was routine. It is always an anticipation of if they will get caught or not, “Earlier, there had been a minor calamity. The Hubermanns couldn’t find their flag. ‘They’ll come for us,’ Mama warned her husband. ‘They’ll take us away.’... Thankfully, it turned up… (Page 103)”. Including suspense is something that Zusak likes to do in order to keep the audience on their toes. It makes the reader’s head spin, wondering what will happen next in the story, basically always guessing and assuming, this genius way of writing will make one not want to put this book down. “The Book Thief” may have been a slow read to begin with, just like any other book it goes through all of the general information that may be boring but has to be done. Although, once past the part of general information it is just about impossible to stop reading because of the suspense and one does not want to stop mid-page in a chapter, it needs to be finished otherwise the reader will be curious as to how it ends and what happens.
