To begin, in the novel, the character of Liesel and her interactions with others helps show the theme of death. Firstly, when Liesel is on the train to Molching and her brother, Werner dies beside her, the theme of death develops. This is displayed in the following quotation, "...Liesel Meminger- could see without question that her younger brother, Werner, was now sideways and dead," (Zusak 20).
