She believes that she is ugly because she does not have blue eyes. She gets teased a lot because she looks different. She was also blamed for example, like for killing Junior’s cat. Although, it was Junior’s fault as he threw the cat out of the window. She wants to be a beautiful blue eyed blonde. She fantasizes of being white that she does anything and everything to be one. She also thinks she is the reason why her parents fight and she believes that if she was beautiful her parents would not fight a lot. One day, Pecola was raped by her father in the kitchen, where her tragic life continued. Like her mother, Pecola fantasized of having blue eyes where at the end she started hallucinating and started talking to herself on how she was the most beautiful person in town with eyes bluer than the sky. She also fantasized on becoming white because being white is considered beautiful, and she was considered ugly. She obsesses over fictional characters because she thinks by consuming products like Mary Jane candies, and drinking lots of milk her skin color will turn to white and she will look like a cute pretty lass like Maureen. She even asked Mr. Soaphead to help her get the blue eyes she wanted. Because Mr. Soaphead felt pity towards her, in return he gave Pecola hope to getting the blue eyes she wanted. It is twisted, innocent and neglected. Morrison showcases love in different perspectives by making each character represent a certain aspect on love. For example, Cholly did not intend to make his daughter, Pecola, suffer when he did wicked things to her; he only wanted to soothe and alleviate her from the pain she was suffering but he does not know how to show it in any other way. Pauline on the other hand longed for a life with a man next to her, whom she can depend upon but she got a job and started imagining a life different from hers. She then started to distance herself from her husband and children but that does not mean she does not love them any longer; she just need to find herself in the process and when she does she will go back to her family and be the old Pauline they once knew. Pecola was a growing teenager who wanted nothing but love and affection from her family. She also wanted to be seen as beautiful not ugly from the people surrounding her.
