THE BIRTH OF COOL presents as a character driven story that blends drama, music, dance, and humor. The script is driven by two goals. One is the actionable goal of winning a mambo dance contest, but moreover, the story is really driven by the inner, emotional goal of both the protagonist Junebug and his father Red to reconnect. They both eventually learn to love again.
The story also explores themes about making the right life choices, reconnecting, and acceptance.

The highlights of this script are the colorful and rich characters. They are well crafted and they simply engage and resonate with the audience from the moment they hit the page. They are believable and they show an authentic range of emotion. They are the type of characters that clearly can attract potential talent.
There are definite strengths to the storytelling and well-crafted moments, especially between Junebug and his father Red. The dancing sequences nicely add to the enjoyment of the script.
However, the structure and the pace require more development. The structure doesn’t feel goal focused and there are scenes that either need to be cut or need to be further developed.
The opening does a nice job with establishing Junebug’s world. The death of his mother interrupts his life and the story is quickly propelled forward when he’s dropped off at his father’s home. He’s a fish out of water in his father’s world. Moreover, they couldn’t be more opposite. This is expertly crafted. Junebug is an awkward, traditional kid, while his father is reckless and lives in a violent
