The binary of beauty versus ugliness is ingrained in us from childhood. Children’s stories and films portrays ‘good’ characters as being young and beautiful and ‘evil’ characters as old and ugly. Disney movies such as Snow White center around the beauty of the princess being so coveted that other characters are willing to do ill upon them to suppress or eliminate their beauty and to make themselves the most beautiful. This narrative is echoed in Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Rapunzel among others. For example in China foot binding was a common practice, because large feet were considered ugly. However, what was truly ugly was the idea that people had to cripple themselves for the sake of beauty. Clear, youthful looking skin and light natural looking makeup is the craze in Korea, along with popula double eyelid surgery to get rid of monolids. Even though the beauty standard is different, western influence is still shown in the eastern world. This is also shown by the heavy usage of skin lightening products in India.
