The Benthic Zone

Decent Essays
The benthic zone is one among the ecological regions of a body of water. It contains the lowest seabed within which it possesses a sediment surface and a few sub-surface layers. Organisms living in this zone, are on or at the bottom of the body of water, in which we call benthos. The benthic zone provides several precious product and ecological services. benthic organisms play a vital role in food chains, as well as food for humans, and a few trifle a big role in the breakdown of organic matter. Some benthic zones, equivalent to areas of coral reefs, brown algae forests, and eelgrass beds serve to buffer wave action on coastlines, providing storm protection. The benthic zone stipulates an area for spawning, foraging, and refuge for numerous

Algal fucoid species such as bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus), brown algae (Fucus disitichus) were the most abundant species present, followed by animal species such as barnacles (Balanus balanoides), sand fleas (Orchestia agilis) and periwinkles (Littorina littorea). Normally barnacles (Balanus balanoides) dominate the supra-littoral mussels dominate the mid-littoral and infra-littoral zone exposed to wave action (Pederson et al., 2000; Hunt and Scheibling, 1995). However, sheltered shores such as Lawrencetown Beach exhibit more algal fucoid growth in the supra-littoral zone followed by Irish moss (Chondrus crispus) in mid-littoral zone (Blaxter and Southward, 1987). There was less Irish moss observed at the site sampled than that mentioned in the…

Sand dune erosion is occurring on the Cronulla coastline due to the coupling of human and natural impacts and is gradually resulting in the beach being less able to be protect itself from natural implications. The constant sand dune erosion is creating a steeper slope this is allowing waves and winds to rapidly remove sand from the dunes. The sand dune erosion is destroying habitats from plants and animals, this is substantially decreasing the biodiversity on the coastal environment. Sand dune erosion is resulting in loose sand to be blown from the dunes because the vegetation has been removed, this is impacting the coastal environment as it is removing all vegetation causing a significant reduction in the biodiversity which is also disrupting the natural processes for the coastal ecosystem. As the sand dunes are eroding since the waves and winds are removing the sand from the shore, the loss of sand results in the beach becoming narrower and closer to the residents.…

The abundance in mangroves at Nudgee Beach provides increased numbers of organisms with habitats and microhabitats that they can accommodate; therefore increasing the overall number of organisms within the entire ecosystem. Each of these organisms must interact with other organisms in order to survive and to find food. The complex feeding relationships between these organisms are divided up into levels that make up the food web [6]. The first level of the food web is made up of autotrophic producers that are…

The GBR’s coral rarely grow lower than 40 meters below sea level since sunlight passes through shallow and clear waters. It has no real soil, being a marine coral ecosystem, but loose carbonate mud covers 135,000 square miles of land. Its biotic factors are animals & plants. It is highly diverse, with 1,500 fish species, hundreds of types of corals, 500 algae species, and many sharks, rays, marine mammals, crustaceans, and echinoderms. Animals like the dugong, butterfly fish, jellyfish, green sea turtle, tiger shark, blue-ringed octopus, krill, cuttlefish, and Crown of Thorns starfish, although of different species, sizes, and niches, all adapt for one of two common goals: to eat or to keep from being eaten.…

Virginia’s coast is seen as the highlight of the state. The only gem that should be protected at all cost. So we pour millions of dollars to beautify the beach and bring in more people. We do this because in the end more people means more money. This mentality has made us blind to the fact that we have other wetlands in far greater danger than the beach.…

There is an ever-growing pressure being placed upon the mangroves in Australia as over 80% of Australia’s population live within 50km of the coast. Land is becoming more in demand and because people aren’t well educated about the benefits of mangroves on the biodiversity of the world, the immediate reaction is to rid the mangroves to make room for construction to cater for the increasing population. The quality and productivity of mangroves are also being affected by the increase on human activity, and when mangroves are lost or disrupted then their ecological and economic functions cease. The most obvious affects from the lack of mangroves would be, the loss of nurseries for fish to grow, increased salinity on the coast and in water supplies, and an increase in coastal damage from natural disasters (Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resource Management Ltd, 2017). Over the course of 200 years approximately 17% of all of Australia’s mangroves have been destroyed and this loss of mangrove habitat has had a direct impact on the functionality as a viable ecosystem.…

I think this behavior is learned rather than inherited. Benthic zone is sometimes filled with vegetation, so stickleback fish could always hide there. On the other hand, marine zone lacks vegetation, they were taught by their territory that schooling in groups is the only way to protect themselves from predators. As a result, they were able to school twice the mean time the benthic stickleback fish could perform. It would be much easier for the enemy to chase down a single fish than chasing down a bunch of them.…

Altogether 28 species of clownfishes were reported from the different geographical locations of the world (Allen, 1975). The majority of clownfishes live in tropical seas (Michael, 2008). The natural tropical realm of the clownfishes stretches across some 12 time zones, a vast expanse touching three continents, numerous seas and countless islands from Polynesia to the east coast of Africa. Distribution of clownfishes from the Gulf of Aqaba in the northern Red Sea, south to Duban, South Africa, and eastward more than 12.000 miles to reach southern Japan ant the Tuamotu Archipelago in southeast Polynesia (Wilkerson, 2001).…

Garbage reduction along with toxins deplete the oxygen content of the water consequently making it impractical for many life figure including larger species like dolphins, shark, seals and penguins to survive. Human manipulation is another issue when it involves aquatic conservation. We account for major fishery consumption, ultimately, altering the biodiversity of these areas. In reference to the Marine Iguana, they are adapted to warmer weather; however, climate changes, as a result of human pollution and harm done to the ozone, has led to extended warm or cool periods that ultimately affects the ability of these organisms to adapt to their natural habitats. This contributes to sudden and unwanted death.…
