I. Get this- a woman, struggling to find a donor for her sick child, posted a video about it on her Facebook page where it essentially went viral. This video was seen, reposted, seen again, and reposted again. Then, out of all this a miracle rose! Implementing social media strategies such as crowd sourcing, group searching, crowd funding, and group donations, many viewers collaborated and together managed to find a donor for the sick child. Amazing, right? In many instances, technology has allowed people to communicate easier. In the past, people could only communicate via letter-writing and telephone calls made from their house. However, with advancing technology, society as a whole has been given numerous new ways to communicate, including …show more content…
Advances like these in social media have affected everyone, but they play an explicit role in the life of the average student. As was stated in the article titled, "The Benefits and Limitations of Social Networking," This quote states that communication between social media users has been improved through the enhancement of messaging between like consumers. Therefore, one could argue that social media has actually caused face to face interaction between people more so than if social media messaging did not exist. In conclusion, without the constantly progressing benefits of social media, communications between would-be users would be extremely limited, and people who may be best friends now may have been mere acquaintances instead. Contrary to popular belief, and stated by editors Magolda and Marcia, “Social media tools and social networking sites encourage students to engage with each other and to express and share their creativity” (Magolda and Marcia). To begin, Social networking sites have served to help students find others who share common interests, and to pave the way for close friendships between people of the same age. outside of school. This contributes to a positive work environment that allows students to ask questions when they need to, and not just within the allotted time for the subject in question. In addition to this, usage of social media allows students to combine their knowledge on several different educational topics. This helps the students to assist one another with homework and subject matter. So, in essence, social media has strengthened general intelligence inside and outside the school environment. So to summarize, social media has accommodated students the opportunity, outside of school, to discuss content learned and to understand it better, creating a universal “helpline” for almost everyone. When developing world-wide relationships, distance no longer becomes an obstacle in maintaining said relationships, thanks in great part to social networking. To start, by implementing social media into his curriculum, a middle school teacher stated that “Now, as we study Islam, students will take part in an online discussion group with practicing Muslims from other countries about their religion”
