There are many critiques circulating around the idea of using enhancement drugs because they have the misconception of being harmful to athletes. However, if a procedure was to be done professionally and the drugs were to be obtained legally from a medical profession then the risk of harm is very slim. In “The Beam in Your Eye” by William Saletan, he states that purchasing steroids off the streets or the internet contains a higher risk than the steroids that the pro athletes receive from medical professionals. Like Savulescu stated in his article if an enhancement drug is regulated to a specific amount and medically viewed it will not put athletes at high risk. Steroids which are a type of lipid is a macromolecule and is already abundant in the human body. Since a type of steroid is already present inside the body it would not be adding a foreign substance into the body. In Saletan’s article, he mentions that the Food and Drug Administration has approved of the human growth hormone for children because it is considered safe and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist have proven it is the same for adults. So, because LASIK is considered a corrective procedure it is not seen as unsafe by the administration or the public. This in fact shows how weak the rules are towards the use of enhancement and its safety. For example, Saletan showed that in the official rules of the Major League Baseball the pitcher cannot put rosin on his gloves, but can put it on his hands. LASIK is seen as a safe procedure because it is done by a medical profession and it is normally seen as a corrective procedure. Whereas steroids and other enhancement drugs have the stereotype of being harmful to the body. However, LASIK is an enhancement for athletes because of the way athletes use them. “If you don’t like the results, your doctor might fire up the laser for a second pass. In the business, this is literally called an “enhancement”” (Paragraph. 14, Saletan). In other words, the LASIK procedure is no different than any other enhancement procedure that is done by athletes professionally. These procedures all have a similar purpose and it is to enhance the athlete’s performance.
Performance enhancement drugs has always been a controversy in sports and it is always being defined as harmful and unethical. However, it is shown that not all performance enhancing procedures are not all harmful to the body especially when being done
