Everyday people wake up and wonder if they are perfect enough for society. We look at our phones and see a perfect body, relationship or anything that’s supposed to be “perfect” and think we are supposed to match up to that. Equality is what we fight for; but, to a certain extent not all equality is equal. It’s a battle within ourselves to be what everyone wants us to be. Trying to equalize everyone is Dehumanizing because we are all different, inequalities are the natural result of living in a free society. Once we are all equal are we even free anymore. Without food for over 10 days, the Jewish prisoners are on a train. When the train stops workers throw some pieces of bread onto the car. Men begin to fight over the bread as workers throw more. Elie watches as an old man drags himself toward the bread while holding pieces inside his shirt. As he puts one piece into his mouth he is attacked by his son and screams “Meir, Meir, my boy! Don’t you recognize me?” (pg. 68) The will to survive became more important than family. Elie learns this quickly after seeing a boy kill his own father and then after, the son killed by others. It becomes evident that nobody is sane anymore, not even him because he sits and watches it all happen. Elie remembers Rabbi Eliahu son running beside him and had not mentioned it to him because he had already gone through the door. He then remembers his son had saw he was getting behind to the rear of the column but he continued to run in front. A terrible thought then crossed Elie’s mind. “What if he had wanted to be rid of his father? He had felt his father growing weaker and believing that the end was near, had thought by this separation to free himself of a burden that could diminish his own chance for survival”. This is the result of being dehumanized. The Jews wanted to be equal with everyone but instead they all became equal with each other. All being mutilated and destroyed in hundreds. If they feel as if they still have faith in God and can continue to put their faith in God, things can turn around for them. That doesn't mean they forget about everything that has happened to them. They take those things, and look at them as a lesson or an extra push to keep going in life.
