The conversation begins with an example that uses lab rats to better understand if a mother were to nurture a pup with constant licking, how the pup would then mother their own pups. Due to her direct involvement with raising adopted children from mothers who were addicted to drugs, Barbara decided to start a program that would pay drug addicted women to take birth control to prevent the birth of children like her own. However, in the four children she adopted, all of them lead “normal” lives now, attending college and having children. The argument Barbara has for her children’s case is that sometimes these adopted children do not get to turn their situation around like the four children that Barbara adopted. The argument of nature and nurture is questioned extensively in this story. Although Barbara believes that babies born to drug addicted women will suffer in their biological makeup, her family is an excellent example how nurture how directly influence how the baby
