Antagonist is the character who opposes the protagonist in the conflict of a literary work. It is not always human. The antagonist may also be an institution, group of persons or a natural force. In Beowulf, Grendel is the antagonist of the work. Grendel is a troll (spirits of the dead). Grendel embodies the opposite of Beowulf.
