According to Giving USA, a public service initiative affiliated with The Giving Institute, charitable giving in the United States reached a high of 358.38 billion in 2014 that had not been seen since the Great Recession. Even more surprising is that for 2015 charitable giving has continued to increase. A reported 373.25 billion was donated to charity. Giving USA also reported that giving across all four categories individuals, corporations, foundations, and bequests increased.

The perspectives offered range from the egoistic view which states that altruism occurs as a result of an expectation of a future benefit to the alter-centric views which attribute acts of altruism to biology. As Khalil outlines in the article the various perspectives laid out explain a portion of altruistic behavior, however, fall short in offering a complete explanation. Khalil asserts that other alternatives should be explored in order to get a better sense of what altruism is. I currently sit on the board of this organization, and for the past few years, the organization has struggled to manage the work as well and growing funding sources. There were a few months that the organization wondered if it would make payroll. Its credit line was nearly maxed out and a number of vendor invoices were left unpaid. A group of board members and staff persons formed a special task force whose jobs were to examine the non-profits current operations but to also look for opportunities grow funding support. Through that effort, it was discovered that individual donations remained steady, however, efforts to connect with individual donors was an area of real opportunity. In addition, the organization did not have an existing strategy for growing new donors. Recognizing that this area was a really opportunity for the organization, for 2016 ongoing donor recognition, outside of events, has become an area of strategic focus. The organization is looking at sharing with donors stories of the individuals that they are helping, naming rights for apartments, the opportunity to come and visit the site to see first hand the impact of their donation, as well designating a donor recognition wall. The goal is to have a wide variety of ways by which to recognize donors in hopes of appealing to the
