This shows the hustle in Jay to make new money as he saw the opportunity to impress and save a wealthier man so he could teach and maybe even give Gatsby some money or tips. Also this being only the start of his mission to become someone, in the picture you can also see a man wearing a grey suit and hat who is supposed to represent Meyer wolfsheim who was the next person to help Gatsby achieve new money by using Gatsby to sell illegal alcohol.
