Think of a telephone pole then imagine a snake as big around the middle of the pole. Almost 23 feet long! Guess what that's the Burmese python. Huge Right? I am now going to tell you about how the Burmese python is affecting the Everglades.…
Search and Rescue in the Florida Everglades Search and Rescue (SAR) in the Florida Everglades provides a unique challenge due to the remote location and operations can often only be attempted by boat or aircraft. A suitable replacement for manned aircraft in these search and rescue operations could be a quad rotor unmanned aerial system (UAS). Manned aircraft, whether fixed wing or helicopters, are expensive to fly and maintain. A fleet of small quad rotor UAS equipped with a SAR specific sensor loadout, could be carried on boats and deployed on location to provide support (“S9 SAR”, n.d.)…
One of the most obvious differences is that Harvey is very current in its effects and still very much relevant to the world, while Katrina has happened 12 years ago and seemingly the effects of it have been long since gone but you would be surprised that the effects of Katrina have actually helped society in how they prepare for hurricane. Katrina brought forth very strong arguments in Louisiana about the levees and other flood prevention and reaction equipment that needed to be taken much more seriously and brought up to more recent code. The levees that Katrina broke were not built properly, they were not designed to be overtopped and they failed before even being overtopped most of the time. The most alarming issues with how the geography of Louisiana was taken was how shallow the levees are, they did not even go down far enough to go into solid ground therefore making the levees almost useless for anyone’s safety. They both hit different areas, Texas was hit by Harvey and it moved to some of Louisiana but it was not horrible for Louisiana.…
Frogs, birds, plant life, and gators all live in the Everglades. A beautiful state park with tons of wildlife. But did you know the Everglades is a very important ecosystem and supports life to various animals. It’s too bad that the Everglades is going down-hill. Farmers and other agriculture is making it so the Everglades’ water is contaminated.…
After the war of 1812, The Treaty of Ghent was signed and in 1814 the United States from economically unchained from the bully that was Great Britain. Lands that were once occupied by the British redcoats were now being threatened by famous American war heroes. Men like Andrew Jackson, and those who followed him in his raid on the redcoats. The men who made up the raid were not average white male militants but was a melting pot of American peoples. The image I gain in my head while reading about the events and how people of different races, languages, even slaves joined together as one to defeat the British from gaining important lands in New Orleans with means to take over more of the United States, particularly the Mississipi.…
The Everglades Foundation is focused on restoring the Everglades and surrounding estuaries to a natural state for clean water access for the people of Florida. Katz and Light would both agree that restoration should be done but they have differing views on restoration. Katz believes that it creates domination over nature and Light believes in non-dominant restoration. In this paper, I will discuss the two views and how it applies to the Everglades Foundation. As I explain these positions I will develop my reasoning and formulate my position on the foundation.…
The Okefenokee Swamp is an interesting place to learn about regardless of how it is described in both passages. The writers differ extraordinarily in their style of writing about the swamp and in their description of the swamp. In the two written passages, there are two detailed descriptions of Okefenokee Swamp. Both seem to be factual; however, one author is informing the audience with facts about the Swamp, while the other is entertaining them by using figurative language to describe the swamp.…
The Florida's Everglades is the first national park made for it’s astounding native animals, plants and environment but, not for it’s scenery. It was the first national park created to save its environment. Ernest F. Coe convinced the government to make the Everglades a national park. The ruff sawgrass usually doesn’t hurt the alligators.…
Despite Florida’s economic boom in the 1920’s, the economy steeply declined as the decade came to an end. Multiple natural disasters hit south Florida and caused tourism and population to go downhill. A hurricane near Miami and Fort Lauderdale damaged the community and wrecked the Overseas Railroad that connected Miami to Key West. A second hurricane flooded the Palm Beach area, which caused Lake Okeechobee to flood. Two thousand people living or staying in nearby communities were drowned.…
In the 1890’s Galveston was one of the biggest cities the United States and also known as, “The New York of the Gulf”, and was on its way to becoming one the most important ports in the country. Everything was well on its way to continue rise up and up until one day it all came crashing down. This was the day of the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, the most deadly hurricane to ever hit.…
Growing up in Louisiana has been a part of my life. Before moving back to Virginia in the 7th grade, we resided in Louisiana for about 7 years. We would travel to New Orleans very often for various sporting events that my siblings and I would participate in or we would go to watch the New Orleans Saints or the New Orleans Pelicans play. New Orleans has so much to offer that for all ages. Many people may think that New Orleans is only for adults but there are some kid-friendly things to do.…
Beyoncé’s utilizes the strong history of Louisiana to generate a sense of pride and dignity throughout her audience. Louisiana is a state of great integrity. Although it’s history begins with slavery, African American culture bloomed and expanded throughout the country. From jazz to the spicy Cajun food, the culture of Louisiana has thrived. Through tribulations throughout history caused by great oppression and violent nature disasters in the present day, Louisiana remains strong.…
As I mentioned in my previous New Orleans post, I recently had my first trip to the Big Easy! Here is how I navigated through it all. Getting to New Orleans While flying into Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is an option, Shreveport is only about five hours from New Orleans so I drove. Driving meant, I had to go pay my friends at Avis a visit.…
