In 1988, near the end of the Iran-Iraq war, the Kurdish people were trying to fight for their independence in Northern Iraq. Iraq responded by completing a series of military actions known as the Al-Anfal campaign. During the campaign, Iraq used poison gas to bomb Halabja, a Kurdish city, and killed up to 5,000 people and injured more than 7,000. According to The Kurdish Project, this was “the cruelest poison gas attack since World War I” (2015).
