When thinking about what might be the most important aspect of engineering is, the things that we may think about the most is money, becoming famous, making a difference. These things all lead to good motivations and inspirations, but what really stands out in the engineering world is ethics. Engineering ethics are the values that all engineers must follow to make sure that every single project that will be done will be done in the safest way. In the story of “The Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb” by Arthur Conan Doyle, Mr. Hatherley is a hydraulic engineer which just opened his own engineering practice. Throughout the years his business has struggled has been falling apart in many ways with him only having three jobs in …show more content…
Hatherley was exiting his office, Colonel L. Stark came up with a job to fix his hydraulic press. The Colonel really did not want anybody to know what he was doing or going to do. Mr. Hatherley saw that the Colonel was not himself and was acting a little weird which should have helped him know that there was something wrong. Another thing The Colonel did was tell Mr. Hatherley that he will give him a lot of money if he let him do the job and not tell anyone about it. One part of the story states, “I thought of the fifty guineas, and of how very useful they would be to me.” This would be a really difficult time for an engineer because it would be hard on the to go by wat the engineering ethics states. Instead of looking for the money, we as engineers should just forget the money and make sure that the project we are working on is accomplished as needed to be. The Colonel told Mr. Hatherley he needed to repair the hydraulic press so that he could get under the next-door neighbor’s home giving him a chance to find what mineral in under the house and how much it would be worth. The Colonel said at the beginning that he would love to use the press to rob minerals from the next-door neighbor. But that would not follow the ethics code which says, “engineers are expected to exhibit the highest standards of honesty and integrity.” Supporting and giving objects to your workers in order for them to rob someone else is not a good and ethical way that any engineer should be. …show more content…
Many engineers should follow the ethics codes to stay out of troubles and to make sure that you have the safety while working. Many engineers who can’t take care of themselves, I think should have to take care of others, help yourself first before you can help others. The main point is that the ethics code should always be obeyed, if that is done, then engineers will have better working experiences and easier times.
