“You can’t expect me to keep a straight face about fathers and mothers. And who’s going to get excited about a boy having a girl or not having her?”(185) Helmhotz listens to John read Romeo and Juliet but finds it amusing to find John talking about the parents in the story and he begins to laugh whenever he hears that Romeo only had eyes for Juliet. The fact that people in World State don’t have parents makes bad relationships because parents are usually the first teachers to children, educating them right from wrong. I believe what Huxley was trying to explain with the lack of parents can be referring to how children would grow up without one of the parents in the late 1930’s when World War 2 was beginning. Helmhotz found it amusing to think that Romeo only loved one person because in the novel there is no such thing of relationships but instead everyone belongs everyone. Huxley could be referring to the Great Depression when explaining the relationships because most of the population were suffering as a whole and each person were sharing the same
