In the end of the story, the investigators find out who the murderer is, which to their surprise was the famous writer Arthur Conan Doyle. They find out who the murderer is, because one of the students, Arthur Conan Doyle, went far away from this birth place for sailing on a whaling ship, where he spent the next three years. Is was an adventure for him, and he found the hunting fascinating. But rumors says, that he wrote a lot of things and stories on the trip.The rumors says, that he wrote those stories to cover up something he did in his past. So the stories about the famous Sherlock Holmes was written to get rid of guilty conscience the accident with the acid and the body, which we are getting told about in ‘The acid test’. The text “The engineer’s Thumb” is about Sherlock Holmes, who is the very intelligent and incredible detective, who can find the solution to almost any case. The way Sherlock Holmes is described is like a hero and an unnatural person. Arthur Conan Doyle described Sherlock Holmes the way, that he wanted to be as a young medical student at the Old College. Because as a curious medical student, you think you are a hero, who knows everything. That is the way Sherlock Holmes is described and that is the way, that Arthur Conan Doyle feels like, when he and some other students are experimenting at the college. “Think for a moment. A group of students, doing their own work or just playing silly beggars. Testing cocktails of drugs. It happened then as now.” Gate said on page 7 line 12-13.
