The Achievement Gap

The achievement gap between rich and poor children extends little by little, and there is not an easy solution to close it. Our society sustains the idea that there must be a division of social classes. This is evident in the way the neighborhoods in large cities are constructed. The rich are secluded in the hills, while the poor live in the communities with factories and liquor stores on every corner. The social construct in the United States is to be blamed for this gap because it allows for children to receive different resources and quality of education, by allowing private education schools and not allowing children to attend schools that are not in their neighborhood of residence. A possible solution for closing the achievement gap would …show more content…
This way when they go to public schools their language is good enough to be in the same level as the other kids and they won't stay behind. Evidence from the text “Education Gap Between Rich and Poor is Growing Wider” by Sabrina Tavernise states “ it is well-known fact that children from affluent families tend to do better in school”. All of this proves that if the student has a good affluent family then this student will do good at school because they are teaching the student well and most likely have a good start for school. All of this proves that most educated students are doing good at school because there families are affluent and they did good at school and taught them at a young age just like every parent should .Based on the evidence we must conclude that parents should start reading to their kids at young age so when they are in school they are in the same level as the other …show more content…
This means that race also affects the way that people are successful. By the end of fourth grade, african american, latino, and poor students of all races are two years behind their wealthier than the white peers in reading and math. This shows us that white and rich students are educated more. This means that the other races are not as educated as the rest because of income or because the parents didn't teach them at a young age. One reason black students benefit more than the whites it is because they have more anxiety over there education. This means that black students have more anxiety about their education than whites since they are more ahead in education than any other race. Black, and hispanic students are more likely to have a lower grade and score lower on state test than a white student. Another reason how the achievement has been difficult is because most of these students decide to drop out of college or high school. This makes the achievement gap more difficult to close since the students leave school. The race achievement gap start to notice before the students start kindergarten. Based on all of this we must conclude that everyone should be in the same level as any other kind of race. One way people can let this happen is by showing the students that the race to be successful in education does not define the way someone learns. Schools that close race achievement gap

In the article “Is Segregation Back in Schools”, Richard D. Kahlenberg discusses how rich schools have a higher chance of the students coming out with better grades because the children are more willing to learn and succeed. The children that attend less wealthy schools can succeed “but they are much more likely to do so if they are surrounded by peers with big dreams”(Kahlenberg.2). Due to this, many people believe it would be best if schools were made to maintain both privileged and underprivileged…

Summary and Response In the article “The Facts about the Achievement Gap”, author Diane Ravitch shows that privatization in the United States education system is a direct response to the achievement gap between white students and minorities. She is a “researcher of education at New York University” (prologue), and once served “in the U.S. department of education from 1991 to 1993” (prologue). Her personal experience in the field of education has shown that “privatization inevitably means deregulation, greater segregation, and less equality” (361). Some major key points that challenge the achievement gap consist of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), and socio-economics.…

Two reputable sources on this topic include Jonathan Kozol’s article, “Savage Inequalities”, and Bill Moyers’ documentary, “Children in America’s Schools”. These sources discuss the causes of school inequality, which include school funding, school conditions, and demographics. Author Diane Ravitch, wrote “The Facts about the Achievement Gap”, an excerpt from her book Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America’s Public Schools, published in 2013. She explains how her argument stems from our unwillingness to improve the conditions of communities and how unconcerned we are about poverty.…

Sociology is a subject that looks at groups and group interactions. Sociologists study different societies to look at how they’re structured, and find out what makes them successful and what issues do they deal with. The article the Black-White Achievement Gap can be analyzed through a sociological point of view since it explores the disparity in the academic achievement between Black and White children. It uses data from an assessment done by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) to detail how the achievement gap has lessened or widened over the years and what influences these changes. In the report, the authors state that the gap was closing from the early 1970’s to the late 1980’s, but from 1990 to the 2000’s the gap shifted…

The achievement gap has been a continuous issue for some time now, meaning every student isn’t receiving the same kind of education as one another. Many parents have tried hard to get their child the best quality of education money can but them, but it is not always guaranteed. The “hidden curriculum”, quality of educators, and charter schools are the ones to blame. Many would assume that every school is alike and teach the same curriculum, but Jean Anyon has proved otherwise. In ‘Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work’, Anyon went to different socially ranking schools such as the “working class” school and even as high as “executive elite”.…

“This reflects the view that children growing up in different positions in the stratification hierarchy have categorically unequal and qualitatively different (rather than continuously graded) life and educational experiences” (Condron, 2009, p.685) Yet, even after black and white schools were integrated, standardized tests were made to hinder blacks, leaving them to do statistically lower when it comes to reading, math, and science (Snyder, 2007, p. 172-175). This hindrance creates a gap between blacks and whites that has sparked controversy in the United…
