Catastrophe does not build character, however, it allows it to be revealed. Every time we make a decision, our character is involved and during conflicted times in life, we all will be faced with the decision to either choose character or to simply compromise. When character is the choice, we will inevitably become stronger regardless if the result of our decision produces negative consequences. This is a quality that has always been instilled in me from my parents since childhood. I always strive to make the decision I believe to be right and fair, regardless if I lose friends in the process. Good character is an important trait to embody in my desired career path as a basketball coach. Typically, a basketball coach is faced with difficult decisions. For example, a coach may have to decide whether or not to allow an athlete to play in a game after they have broken a team or school rule. “Leaders cannot rise above the limitations of their character” - John C. Maxwell. My character would be imperative to my role as basketball coach, due to the fact that no matter how good a player may be, I would not make decisions that would ultimately tarnish my character in the end. With any career path I decide to take, I plan to be a leader and I intend to strive to become the best leader I can be by utilizing these qualities in my life. “If you can become the leader you ought to be on the inside, you will be able to become the leader that you want to be on the outside. If you are able to do that," says Maxwell, "you'll find there's nothing in this world you cannot do". To be a great leader of others, you must first be a great leader of yourself. No one is perfect, we will always make mistakes and face tribulations throughout our entire lives.
