Choices led to Salem’s fall and it was the core of everyone’s hatred for each other, all for a quest of lust. The Crucible was a build up of hatred for neighbours and friends, a wild quest for vengeance. Being called a “witch” would’ve had the most dire consequences. A foolish quest for personal gains led to the deaths of strangers and beloved ones. Arthur Miller depicted religious views on witchcraft from the community, which was not real, and in reality was really just backstabbing. Elizabeth was arrested because of a mysterious needle in a poppet. The poppet was made by Mary but believed to be stuck in by Abby so she could call Goody Proctor a witch that came to stab her. She is taken to court and is questioned about John’s lechery. She chose to save John during his court deposition, when he confessed to lechery. Elizabeth is called in to reassure whether the statement John made was another sin to be counted for or a lie. She lies to save John the trouble and time, John is testifying against Abby and trying to free his friends and innocents.
