Change in Views Overtime Langston Hughes had a rather difficult life in post-war United States, as with the United States being a rather racist society, excluding and handicapping all races besides white. Hughes, being partially African American, White American, and Native American, Hughes experienced the worst of the worlds firsthand. He was under the stereotypes all the time, it be African American stereotypes, or Native American stereotypes. As a result of this racism he endured, Hughes poems was directed towards American society and towards the ruined dreams of people that were suppressed by the racism.…

Mrs. Jones is a nice, caring women that helps and cares for a boy named Roger even though he tried to steal from her. (Hughes Page 1). Mrs. Jones helps Roger by feeding him a meal and having him wash his face. (Hughes Page 2). Embarrassed and hiding her face, Amy Tan struggles to accept herself during an excruciating dinner her mother had set up with an american family. The lesson she was taught here is one she will come to remember for a long time. This story, Fish Cheeks, by Tan shines a light on the idea that parents lessons are better learned through austerity. Kids will remember the moments in life where they felt strong emotions, like anger, embarrassment, and shame. Kids remember lessons through thoughts and feelings, and getting a harsh lesson from a parent is always remembered.…

In this short story, “Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones is characterized through various indirect characterizations. First of all, after Mrs. Jones encountered the boy she “simply turned around and kicked him,” because he “ran up behind her and tried to steal her purse” (54). Her actions proved that she is a tough and confident women because she was not scared of him. Also, Mrs. Jones’s actions manifested she is tough as nails because of her willingness to fight back. In the short story "Thank you Ma'am", by Langston Hughs, Hughs highlights that no matter how bad of a situation you're in; you can get overcome it with kindness. The protagonist, Luella Bates Washington Jones, is teaching a young boy named Roger right from wrong, after he tried to steal her pocketbook for blue suede shoes. Mrs. Jones says, "'I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son—neither tell God, if he didn’t already know" (Hughs 3). The fact that Mrs. Jones brings back her past trying to teach Roger a lesson demonstrates that she has also been in a similar situation. Luella doesn't act maliciously around Roger for trying to steal her pocketbook instead, she feeds him, makes him wash his face, and even gives him advice.…
In the Fictional, Thank You, Ma’am,” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones plays three stages of dynamic change throughout the story from a uncaring character to treating someone as if her own with forgivingness and generosity towards the end. Mrs. Jones having looking forward to an uneventful life is displeased when something unpleasant takes place. “The large women simply turned around and kicked him right square in his blue-jean sitter.” (Hughes, 1) This quote illustrates that not caring, Mrs. Jones applies violence towards the situation with Roger yet not aware of his character. Indeed, a highly appropriate response to such a situation, as Roger had tried to steal her purse.…
The poem that I choose to study was Third Degree by Langston Hughes. I first explicated the poem myself and then I researched other explications on the poem. The major differences between my explication and the others was the background information on Hughes and the connotative meanings. When I first choose Third Degree, I did not know a thing about the author, time period, or even the content of the poem.…
Hughes, the quintessential Harlem Renaissance figure in literature, represents a whole new generation of black writers and intellectuals who emerged in this period following slavery and reconstruction. The Harlem Renaissance is a movement that was one of the first occasions for African-Americans to be able to express themselves culturally. At the start of the poem, Hughes claims: “ I, too, sing America” (Hughes 1). Or in other words, Hughes is asserting his right to feel patriotic towards his country, to feel “American” despite being: “ the darker brother” who must “eat in the kitchen/ When company comes” (Hughes 2-4).…
Over the years, African-Americans have dealt with the strains of finding and becoming comfortable with their own identity in America. The reason for this is because from the time of slaves being brought into this country there has been two Americas; a “white” America and a “black” America. Both are the same country but divided by different means. The Americas are divided by the majority and minority groups. With African-Americans being the minority they are pressured into feeling as though they have to change who they are and how they act in order to be accepted.…

Langston Hughes’s poem “My People” is a short poem that gives off a variety of meanings. Hughes’s poem gives the reader a different form of viewing people by emphasizing certain features from his people, although not directly throwing it out there for the reader to grasp right away. Also, interior and outer beauty. When the reader first reads this short poem, they would assume that the narrator is implying that his people are beautiful and that is all, just beautiful. Although, as the reader continues to read the poem thoroughly they will realize that there is more to it then just “beautiful” through out the rest of the poem.…
