The Gateway Academy is the second business that I am looking at in terms of functional areas. This is a contrasting business to Tesco as it is not in the private sector but the public. This means that the Gateway Academy is about providing a service and not necessarily about making a profit. The functional areas are:
Student Services – This is the department or functional are in the school where students can go if they need help with anything, they deal with passes, sickness and other student issues. They work with the teaching functional area very closely as they must be informed if students are missing from class.
Human Resources – Human resources is very similar to that of Tesco. They carry out the same roles in the school such as hiring and firing staff. Production must tell Sales about production problems which will affect customers. Production and Sales working in partnership can increase profit and help maximize potential sales within the business. | Sales and Finance | Finance in Tesco must know about customer enquiries to check their credit rating before sales are made. Finance will be involved when discounts are agreed or there are problems with customer payments. They generally take care of all the money. Finance can have control over the money and if it is being spent in the correct way. This also helps Tesco achieve profit maximization. They will also have a hold over the growth of the business if the finance is managed correctly then budgets can be worked out giving money to areas which may need developing. One sale in Tesco could have a number of functional areas involved in it. For example:
A can of hair spray:
1st : Marketing department comes up with a promotion because of information that the sales department has given in regards to hair spray
2nd: A customer places and orders if it is online or picks up the can off the shelf, they then buy the product. The sales department will deal with this. Also at the same tie the ICT systems which are managed by the ICT department are removing the stock item from their system database.
3rd: A person may have a problem with the product and must see the customer service functional area
4th: A new can of hair spray must be ordered in to replace the one sold. The purchasing department may be in charge of this. Again this could be informed through the sales department or simply through the ICT system.
5th : If the product has been ordered by a company or online, other functional areas may be involved such as finance, which supplied
