Tert-Butyl Chloride Lab Report

Decent Essays
The experiment outlined by this lab report demonstrated the idea of synthesizing tert-butyl chloride through an SN1 reaction. The SN1 reaction took place with a polar protic solvent taking the place of the leaving group (alcohol) and creating a new replacement bond with the carbocation to form a tertiary chloride structure. The product was then tested for this structure by reacting it with two substances: sodium iodide and silver nitrate. These tests were to demonstrate that if the product obtained through experimentation was indeed a tertiary structure, it would react readily via an SN1 reaction with silver nitrate. The tests proved this theory. As mentioned previously, the experiment also demonstrated how the reaction can be affected by nucleophilicity,

CAUTION: It is best not to get dichloromethane on your skin. Gloves are to be worn during this experiment, if improper safety precautions are taken there is a possibility of irritation, and or burning of the skin. CAUTION: Gas will build up in the separatory funnel while you are shaking it, so you must vent the funnel occasionally to prevent the stopper from popping out, causing a mess and possibly getting dichloromethane on your skin.…

The results obtained for this lab were very unsatisfactory, even though the results sustain a general trend throughout the course of the experiment, the results were not expected. At the beginning of the experiment all reagents produced satisfactory results, the reactant 2-bromopropane was determined to be the limiting reagent for the Grignard formation and the Isopropyl Magnesium Bromide was correctly formed. However, random errors occurred at the nucleophilic addition step. At this period, it was observed there was not condensation happening inside the reflux condenser while the mixture was being heating, and as a result, the nucleophilic addition was not successful because some of the product was lost through boiling without condensation.…

    Dinitrophenol Lab Report

Dinitrophenol (DNP) is a compound most commonly found pesticides and food dye. When used as supplementation for weight loss, Dinitrophenol acts as an ionophore which allows protons to leak across the inner mitochondrial membrane thereby interfering with the electrochemical gradient in the mitochondrial which is needed for ATP synthesis. This disturbance in proton motive force used to drive ATP synthesis will result in the loss of potential energy as heat as the energy can no longer be used to form ATP efficiently. As a result, this loss of heat can be a factor behind why individuals taking DNP will excessively sweat. On the other hand, the need for ATP to function will force the body to compensate in the loss of ATP production by using fat…

In this equation, x and y denotes the number of moles of RE and Mn atoms per formula unit of the structure, respectively. The RE and Mn represent the theoretical magnetic moment of trivalent free RE3+ ions and divalent Mn2+ ions respectively. The experimental values of total magnetic moments were found to be smaller than the calculated values (Table xyz). The crystal field effects can lead to lower value of magnetic moments for RE3+ ions in these compositions as compared to free RE3+ ions, which in turn could lower the total magnetic moment of these compositions. This discrepancy in the total magnetic moment values could also be due to the presence of secondary phases in these samples.…

Introduction: Resistance to antibiotics is an ongoing concern of the pharmaceutical industry. The limited number of antibiotics in the market to treat Gram negative bacteria made their resistance an issue that is being addressed worldwide. The isolation of colistin from Bacillus polymyxa var. colistinus in Japan in 1949 and the introduction of colistin into the market in 1959 as its inactive prodrug colistin methanesulfonate (CMS) were significant milestones in the treatment of this type of infections. However, the use of colistin was decreased because of the reported nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity associated with it.…

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the presence of the analgesic compounds acetaminophen, aspirin, caffeine, and salicylamide in the over-the-counter medications Anacin, Bufferin, Excedrin, and Tylenol. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was used to analyze solutions of the medications; the TLC plates were visualized using ultraviolet light and iodine staining. The ten micropipets used to spot the TLC plates were made from glass capillary tubes by heating the middle of each tube in a Bunsen burner flame, pulling the ends of the tube away from each other so that the middle was stretched into a thinner tube, and breaking the cooled capillary in the middle to form two micropipets. Two silica-gel TLC plates were spotted with solutions…
