When people think of heroes, they think of people like Superman, who save the world from bad guys. But what about the runner who lost his leg and still attempted to run across Canada to raise money for people affected by cancer? Should he not be considered a hero? This young man's name was Terry Fox. Terry fox is a Canadian hero due to his determination, courage, and willpower . He is considered to be one of the most inspiring Canadian figures of the 20th century, because instead of becoming depressed and sorry for himself he decided to run across Canada to raise awareness and money for cancer research. Fox put his own life at risk to help save and other people from cancer. Fox inspired everyone across the country during his Marathon of Hope, and it still continues today, but it is called the Terry Fox Run. He never did the run for himself, Terry Fox ran for the benefit of other people, which makes him a hero.
Terrance Stanley Fox was born on July 28, 1958 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, being named after both his uncles. He had three siblings, the older brother Fred, a younger brother Darrell, and sister, Judith. His parents were Betty and Rolly Fox. In 1966, the Fox family moved closer to Vancouver and eventually settled in Port Coquitlam, a small town located about twenty-seven km east of Vancouver. Fox was always a very athletic child even from a young age. In elementary school, he played baseball. He spent a lot of time with his basketball teammates, going to parties with them and having a couple drinks He even tried dating a couple times. He was never interested in drugs, which a lot of people did at this time. When Fox graduated, he finished with all A’s and one B. He later enrolled at Simon Fraser University, where he played for the school’s junior varsity basketball
