Tensho Shobun Analysis

Tensho Shobun was an artist that was friends with a great line of artists during this period, including Josetsu and Sesshu. He became very familiar with the Ma-Xia style and used this strong Korean influenced in this works. His ax-cut rocks are influenced by Ma Yuan and his trees are of those of Xia Gui. The Song Dynasty inspired many works in this period and contain many of the similar attributes. The use of mistiness is incorporated throughout this screen as well as far away mountains. The use of a more miniaturized landscape is an attribute of a lyrical style of landscape paintings, which was the type of style Tensho used most. The black and white gives high depth into this screen, making it blend and having fluidness within it. The little details on this screen are closer to the bottom, showing a little house at the corner on top of a hill surrounded by trees. From the amazing gold screens, to paintings the Japanese styles flourished inspirationally. Out of all the styles, I was more interested in the Ukiyo-e prints, which were very new to me and can be described as the ”world or pleasure” or the “floating world”. Although, these were short lasting, these artworks reflect the growing power of the merchant and middle class. This interested me because for once it wasn’t just about the most in power. Another thing that stood out to me was that these artworks were created on woodblocks and each were carved by hand followed by block of color. This print shows the effect of abstraction in Western Art. Many artworks during the 18th-19th centuries displayed themes of landscape along with people. Hiroshige paintings were often more stick like, but showed the common theme of having people with landscape. A lot of the attributes can relate to Chinese
