Around the age of 2 it was discovered that something might be wrong with her. She was not speaking and did not enjoy playing with other children. For Temple, it was a burden to be around other children. They did not understand her and she did not understand them. Temple did not start speaking until the age of 4 years old. Eustacia had pursued professional help to see what was wrong with Temple and why she has not progressed like other children her age; including how she had raised her first child. Temple was diagnosed with Autistic Schizophrenia and it was suggested that she be placed in an institution for alike children and others with mental disabilities. Temple’s mother never gave up on her and I believe her patience helped shape Temple into the extraordinary woman that she is today. Temple did not show interests in things other girls were doing her age. I personally think one of the reasons why; is because she had an issue with showing affection. Girls her age were into boys and got googly eyed over them. Temple shows throughout the film that she want’s affection but is not sure how to receive it from humans or to provide it to them either. While spending a summer at her Aunt’s ranch with cattle, she became very interested in their behavior and how they became calm when entering a “squeeze machine”. She saw how it calmed the cattle down and thought she could benefit from the squeeze machine to receive the affection that she could not reciprocate at the time. She built her own squeeze machine in her room to keep her calm and nonetheless out of trouble. As time progressed, Temple was seen giving her mother a hug during Dr. Carlock’s funeral
