When
Odysseus revealed himself, Telemachus thought he was talking to a God. However, when Telemachus finally realized that Odysseus was really his father, he reacted like any child would when they finally see their father after so long. “Both men so filled with compassion, eyes streaming tears, that now the sunlight would have set upon their cries…” (Hom. Od. 16.249-50). Despite Odysseus being away for twenty years, the intensity of emotion they had when he revealed who he really was to Telemachus showed mutual love. Both Odysseus and Telemachus play extremely pivotal and important roles in Homer’s The Odyssey. The phrase “like father like son” can easily describe the similarities between Odysseus and Telemachus’s characters. However, no human beings are exactly alike as both characters also share a great number of differences. In Book 5, Lines 394-399 of his Odyssey, Homer offers the following simile: “And as welcome as the show of life again in a father is to his children, when he has lain sick, suffering strong pains, and wasting long away, and the hateful death spirit has brushed him, but then, and it is welcome, the gods set him free of his sickness, so welcome appeared land and forest now to Odysseus, and he swam, pressing on, so as to set foot on the mainland”. In this paper, I will argue that although the surface meaning of this passage is that the land for Odysseus is like the recovery of a sick father for a child, the deeper meaning is that the passage and other textual evidence indicate several times that Odysseus is more like the father. This comparison anticipates the end of the book when Odysseus…

Odysseus says, “’I wanted to see [the Cyclops] and claim the stranger’s gift… So we lit a fire and made our thank-offering, and helped ourselves to as many cheeses as we wanted to eat; then we sat inside till he should come back with his flocks’” (111). Odysseus is impulsive and does not think before he acts. He is very selfish and only wants to see what glory the Cyclops gives him. He expects everyone to bow down to him, let alone know who he is, contrasting Odysseus when he fights the suitors at the end of the story and receives glory from his city. When Polyphemus, the Cyclops who happens to be Poseidon’s son, returns home, he traps Odysseus and his crew in his cave.…
