Since 2013 there have been over 50,000 teen suicides in the United States alone. Suicide has become an epidemic among teens. Teens committed suicide for many reasons; including feeling alone, feeling depressed, or being confused about what they believe is love. Depression is a mental illness that takes over someone’s life in a heartbeat. Depression can cause teens to feel hopeless, loss of appetite, sleep changes, anger/irritability, and loss of energy, self-loathing, reckless behavior, or concentration problems. Romeo and Juliet showed some of these signs throughout the book. Juliet was forced to marry Paris. “Soft! Take me with you, take me with, wife. How? Will she none? Doth she not give us thanks? Is she not proud? Doth she not count her blest, unworthy as she is, that we have rough so worthy a gentlemen to be her bride?’ (iii, v, 142-146). This was Capulet talking to Lady Capulet after Juliet refused to marry Paris. Capulet was trying to make Juliet feel bad but say that she was being ungrateful for all that they have done. Juliet tried to explain that she was uninterested in Paris, but her father didn’t hear anything she said. So Juliet felt unheard and trapped, because she was married to Romeo at this time, but had no choice but to marry Paris. Juliet tried to talk to the nurse about everything and she took Juliet’s parent’s side. This hurt Juliet because the nurse was the person that helped Romeo and Juliet get married, and now she is encouraging Juliet to marry Paris. Juliet begins to feel helpless and unheard.
