Some factors include: relaxation, stress reduction, enhance sexual attractiveness, and/or to satisfy their curiosity about alcohol in general. Also, some experts have found that drinking is so routine, some people find it hard to explain why they do it. Other contributing factors are media promotion; such as signs posting drink specials outside of bars or sporting events. Virtually all high school students and most college students are under 21. However, most drink alcohol at least occasionally, and many drink frequently and heavily. They can get alcohol for free or at low prices, which contributes to their drinking at levels that significantly increase their risk of negative alcohol-related consequences. If anything, they are starting to drink at a younger age, and their drinking patterns are becoming more extreme. Some teenagers who are under the influence of alcohol, have the tendency to become belligerent. Drinkers may misread cues from other people as being offensive, and react violently. For instance, police officers could be responding to a call that was reported there was a young woman being loud and disorderly. Officers arriving on the scene could be trying to deescalate the situation by trying to calm down the young woman, but because she’s under the influence, she’s misinterpreting the officers’ behavior as being offensive. So as a result, the young woman becomes combative and ultimately begins to resist the officers’ verbal commands. In sum, officers arrest the woman for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Alcohol consumption affects everyone differently. One effect is impairing someone’s decisions who has been drinking and driving. One study in 2009, found 19% of drivers under 21 who were involved in fatal crashes, had blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels over the legal limits. Some of these effects often lead young drinkers to come into contact with police, either as offenders or as victims.
