Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. A trailblazer of the Republican Party, he was a leading force of the Progressive Era. Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858. He was the second of four children born to Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt. They lived in New York City. Roosevelt had a very difficult childhood in fighting a sickly form of asthma, but he managed to successfully regain his health. Roosevelt was homeschooled before he attended Harvard University in 1876. He wanted to pursue scientific artwork but did not follow through due to him having to drop out and work in an indoor working lab. As he started his new journey, he met and married Alice Hathaway Lee.
