“Conscience- an inner feeling or voice viewed as acting as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one’s behavior.” Conscience- a vital component of the human personality. Conscience- what most people take for granted. A psychopath, also called a sociopath, suffers from a flaw that does not come from a mental illness but from a flaw in characteristics. This flaw does not make them hallucinate as if they were psychotics, for they are in touch with reality. They understand what is right and what is wrong. They understand that killing is cruel, wrong, and a sin-- they just simply do not care. They do not care that they are hurting families of victims, murdering a fellow human being, or growing closer to the devil’s snares of evil. A psychopath’s conscience is either non-existent, or extremely weak and incapable of hindering their violent actions. This makes the psychopath capable of killing without the slightest feeling of guilt, remorse, or sorrow. However, this is not what makes a psychopath frightening. This minority of serial killers are insane and murder is a side effect of their madness. Such as David Berkowitz, “the Son of Sam murderer”, a serial killer from New York that was of much danger in the 1970s for his violent murders. For someone to be classified as insane, they must be “in a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behavior, or social interaction.” These killers can hear voices, or see visions, but in worse cases suffer from both of these symptoms.
