Technology And Cosmopolitanism

Decent Essays
New technology caused cosmopolitanism to come back to life because it has helped promote social change. Social media plays a role in Appiah’s vision of cosmopolitanism because sites such as Twitter and Facebook are used by people for the sole purpose of sharing personal opinions on trending topics. It strengthens Appiah’s idea because people become aware of the most popular issues around the world, the downfall to social networking is that having a conversation through computer screens causes people to view issues through “imaginative engagement” lenses. The person may not fully understand the problem due to the fact they may not have experienced or exposed to it personally so they have to take another individual’s word for it. Another drawback

Commentators like Lam and to a lesser extent Turkle fail to see past the surface of new media usage. To them an individual who is engaged in social media is nothing more than a person captivated by a computer monitor, when in reality the individual is using the computer monitor to interact, communicate, and express themselves in ways that would have been impossible only a brief decade ago (Gopnik,2011). A quote from Alison Gopnik best summarizes the views held by Lam and others like him, “the year before you were born looks like Eden, the year after your children were born looks like Mad Max” (Gopnik,2011). The digital word is an amazing place, and the fact that it is distinct from the actual reality around us does not devalue its usefulness in making our…

We live in a world where technology is so advanced that computers, smartphones, internet and other modern scientific discoveries are essential parts of our daily lives. They allow us immediate access to sharing information worldwide. Digital technologies have changed every aspect of our lives; from the way we work and learn to the way we play and socialize. Due to the progression of technology, many philosophers have questioned how this major change will have an impact on the human society. Kwame Anthony Appiah, in his essay “Making Conversation”, discusses cosmopolitanism, the ideal of respecting and understanding others, can be achieved by communicating and learning about each other.…

“I Am So Totally Digitally Close to You” written by Clive Thompson and “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr both delineate how technology has changed the way individuals interact with others and the way it influences ones point of view. Carr and Thompson also contrast because Carr finds with technology becoming a predominant source of information, the ability to focus and think critically is hindered while, Thompson shows how the use of social media on a daily basis can control lives. “I Am So Totally Digitally Close to You” and “Is Google Making Us Stupid” share similarities because technology has changed the way individuals interact with each other. In Thompson’s “I Am So Totally Digitally Close to You” he aims to explain why individuals are attracted to Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media contact.…

People from all over the world can voice their opinion through computer and phone screens. Appiah’s idea of cosmopolitanism was brought back to life once social media were invented because it made it easy for people to communicate and reason with each other. The apps, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram limit miscommunication among people because it allows people in different locations to share their customs and belief’s. Assumptions no longer have to be made because society would be able to understand other people’s views on a matter. Social media makes it easier for humans to interact with each other, the conversation “doesn’t have to lead to consensus about anything, especially not values; it’s enough that helps people get used to one another” (82).…

Her second claim is that there are three powerful fantasies that all humans share: that we will always be heard, that we can put our attention wherever we want it to be, and that we never have to be alone. Turkle feels that one of the main reasons social media has become so popular is because it provides automatic listeners, thus fulfilling all three of the powerful fantasies. I feel that this is true. In addition, ranting on Facebook or Twitter or other forms of social media provides people with vent without the added strain of trying to hold a conversation which requires both give and take (para. 20). Turkle concludes her article with a call to action.…

Ms. Turkle has several theories, such as connection and the immediate need of people to connect. People don’t always have time for each other in person, but only in social media or online. Text driven social media does not allow people or teenagers nowadays to find time to help them discover themselves or their identity and values. Social media keeps today’s teens tethered to their phones and applications. Teenagers need to have separation and have time to be themselves.…

In “Connectivity and Its Discontents,” Sherry Turkle states that the wide use of technology is affecting the foundation of which people are building their relationships off of. People crave the affection and connection of other people. However, what we believe to be known as “connecting” is completely based off of our technological needs. When we are physically there with another person we tend to doze off and connect with our technology more than we are actually connecting with the person we’re physically with. We have sacrificed conversation for mere connection.…
