Laud Humphreys (1970) conducted a study called Tearoom Trade: his hypothesis was to investigate homosexual (gay) encounters occurring in public toilets throughout the USA. He observed men using public toilets: those who had homosexual encounters he followed home to find out their martial status and used the pretext that he was doing a health survey. His covert observations meant that participants hadn't consented to the investigation and his entire investigation is flawed with ethical issues surrounding the moral injustice of lying to potential homosexual candidates and using the assumption that they were in fact homosexuals.
