While preparing for my life to begin in August and become a first year teacher, I am reflecting on the theories, practices, and knowledge that the WTAMU education program has given me. In this reflection, I share my experiences that connect to the knowledge and skills that WTAMU has given me to become an effective teacher. Finally, I will discuss my goals I plan to achieve for the duration of my teaching career. While working towards my degree as an ec-6 generalist, I have been introduced to many different types of lesson plans. Each type of lesson plan I received information on deemed …show more content…
For example, I was able to observe my cooperating teacher conduct a math lesson. Her lesson plan followed the Madeline Hunter format. To begin we discussed measurements and the different ways things can be measured. Students were sent to different stations and asked to measure different items and record their findings. For the duration of this activity the teacher went to each group multiple times and discussed their findings. At the completion of the stations, the teacher asked higher order thinking questions. Many students gave very insightful thoughts and input that created a society of understanding that was clear to see. If I was to teach this lesson to my future class, I would teach it exactly the same. The scaffolding and gradual release that was in her lesson held to be very successful in when …show more content…
My hopes for my first year of teaching are to incorporate and enhance my skills in scaffolding for my student’s benefit. I yearn to be continuously learning about new was to use scaffolding in my future classroom. I also wish to gain a better understanding of each writing genre so that I am able to pick out mentor texts that aid in my students learning. As of now, my weakest point lies in not fully understanding the writing genres. This is one point I plan on working very hard at in order to help my students. After my first year of teaching, I plan on intently focusing and reflecting on what worked, did not work, and needs to be added. I want to make sure that my students are getting everything they need in order to be successful readers and writers and yearn to love these subjects. My career-long aspiration is to instill a love for reading and writing within my students. In order to fulfill this desire, I plan on continuously learning and seeking new ways to create a passion inside each student for learning. With that being said, I feel that the knowledge and tools given to me by the Teacher Education Program at WTAMU, and hours of observations I have completed, have greatly benefited me. There are many articles that I have read over the last few weeks, but two in particular really challenged my thinking and philosophy in regards to education. In the article, “Edwin & Phyllis,” Lynn Fendler engages her readers with a meaningful dialogue between an experienced teacher and a prospective educator, debunking some of the more traditional responses that young, perspective teachers might give for wanting to become educators. The truth is that teaching can be anything but glamorous and oftentimes straddles the fine line between causing more harm then the good that it seeks to accomplish in the life of a child. Prospective teachers must not only think about what motivates them in wanting to become educators, but what type of teachers…

As a student, I have gone through many teachers, all with lasting impacts, arguably, not all good. Although I cannot say I have looked through the looking glass of the teaching side, or walked a mile in any of my professor’s shoes; I’ve noted there is an importance to teachers who not only develop characters on a page, but the characters of their students. You, Mr. Smith, have dedicated your life to teaching students, enabling their comprehension. As Aristotle says, ‘Those who know, do. Those who understand, teach.’…

I am certain that Golden Apple’s teacher preparation program cultivates exceptional teachers who selflessly give back to society, construct a positive environment for children in need, and play a supportive role in students’ lives. Graduates of this program are unparalleled when it comes to classroom instruction and passing on life-altering skills and ideas. This fact resonates with me because I am fortunate to have studied with some of the best teachers in the area, teachers who have impacted my life in tremendous ways, and I believe that a child should not be denied this kind of education due to a lack of resources far beyond their…

Every day I’m surrounded by others who share the same passion as I do. We all want to become educators. We want to spend our days with little ones expanding their minds and setting up a strong educational foundation for the rest of their lives. Although we all share this same desire, there are major differences in the way we view teaching and how we will teach our future students. Even if we weren’t aware of it, these differences began the moment we were born, and have continued to change throughout our lives.…

When you run into one of your former students who is successfully earning their degree you get an amazing feeling that you have made a true difference in their life. This has happened with several of my past students over the years, including my “at-risk” students who were labeled as such for fear that they would not graduate—to help them overcome all odds and do exactly that is what makes teaching so fulfilling. When I resided in Turkey in the third grade, as a military child, my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I knew immediately that I wanted to be a teacher just like him. Dr. Mossburg, who is now the Chief of Curriculum for DoDEA’s Education Division, made learning fun and exciting.…

Becoming an educator is one the noblest professions an individual can go into. A teacher can have a powerful impact in a student’s live, both positive and negative. Teaching is one of the few careers that directly affect the future of our nation, and though this may be considered a cliché, the truth of the matter is that you may have a larger impact on children’s lives than some of their parents. You spend hours upon hours with your students, whereas busy or career-driven parents may not have the same opportunities. Becoming an educator is conducive to your home or family life, allows you to see the potential in students, and perhaps most notably, provides the opportunity for you to essentially mold lives within one short calendar year.…
