Oral language development refers to the process and stages a child will go through while learning to communicate through spoken words. This process occurs over many years and varies from child to child. Oral language skills begin to develop in babies as they listen to the people around them speak and eventually the child will begin to use language on their own. How quickly a child’s vocabulary grows is greatly influenced by how much the parents talk to their child; however sometimes other factors can be involved such as a mental or a learning disability. Oral language development is critical because it is the foundation of literacy development. In order for a child to learn to read they must understand the way language works and the way sounds work in the language. If a child has poor oral language skills he/she will most likely struggle with reading and writing. This is why it is important to build oral language skills in students. This would help her with vocabulary, words and letter sound reinforcement, and story forms. Literacy-related play centers would also be beneficial to her because it would provide opportunities to engage in conversation and act out a story line from beginning to end in a manner that does make sense. Writing assignments such as a journal or short story would also be a good activity for Melissa to help her see her words and thoughts on paper and how they form a complete though. I would also suggest that the parents read to her at home by reading her favorite books over and over again so that she can build that understanding of how a story is told. Due to her slow processing I believe this repeated reading would work well for her. I also suggest that she continue to receive the RTI tier group invention that she is currently
