The first notes of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade in C rose sweetly rom the orchestra pit, muffled only slightly by the rustling of the the curtain and the colorful stage lights began to dim. This was it. After months of long and painful hours of rehearsal, it was finally opening night. Her pointe shoes were freshly coated with rosin and her hair neatly slicked back into a tight bun sitting on top of her head. Chin up, toes pointed, legs straight, back arched, she whispered to herself as she watched the corps members flow elegantly on stage. You have been working nonstop for this opportunity. Don’t mess it up. Taking a deep breath, Sasha lifted her arms, plastered a perfect smile on her face, and took her first step on stage.

She began to recite all the notes her choreographer had given her the night before. Straighten your back knee in the saut de chat; lift your head in the grande jeté; look to the audience during the pirouette; land on two feet after the assemblé. Sasha looked straight into the audience and began her final steps that closed the show. She elegantly sashayed towards the back corner of the stage to give her ample room to leap into the wings. After taking a deep breath, she flew into the air, toes pointed until they cramped and legs straight until they locked in place. Sasha could feel her hair blow back as leaped across the stage, the feeling of triumph and happiness fill her chest. She felt alive, the adrenaline of being on stage overwhelmed her, and there was a huge smile across her face. Every step had been perfect, every movement was fluid, and every person in the audience watched in amazement. As the orchestra played their final note and the music began to fade, a sickening crunch of a breaking bone was heard throughout the auditorium. Scrambling was heard behind the curtain and faint cries echoed across the stage. Finally, the curtain closed and the house lights turned on signalling the end of the performance.
